I spent several weeks this past October traveling thru the Midwest to the corn-fields of Central Illinois. I’ve been a Getty Contributor for just over a year now and I wanted to get some photographs of farmers from the Midwest during harvest season that I’d be able to submit sometime this year. I blocked out about a week to stay with some friends in Bloomington-Normal. When I told them what I wanted to shoot, their best suggestion was to go to a grain elevator and see if anyone would let me photograph them. I can be a little shy initially, so I wasn’t totally stoked about doing that — I did end up doing it later in the week and with great success. Eventually, I was put in touch with a local who knew just about everyone in the area and he spent the day driving me around to different elevators and farms.

The first farm we went to was a dairy farm owned by Larry Irion (pictured above). Larry was wonderful and welcoming (as most Midwestern folk are) and he welcomed us in for a breakfast of homemade cinnamon buns and hot coffee, which was perfect given that the weather had turned cold early and being outside was rather unpleasant.

Larry was rather jovial and spend more time laughing and making jokes than anything, but for a few serious moments, in his conversation with Dave (my tour guide), he got rather solemn and I snapped a few frames with the bounce flash being my only source of light.

We spent the rest of the morning shooting on his farm, but I could’ve stopped at that one shot and felt like the day was a complete success. It’s always amazing when there’s that one moment you capture for a day — a moment you could never have invented that makes the entire day’s work a total joy.

I accidently stubbled on to my photographs from bling this morning-Thursday, Mar. 18.
I wondered if I would get to see any of these photos you shot back in October. I know you shot a lot that day. Are there any more out there? Thanks, Larry
